I've been travelling now for almost 10 years and always book insurance for my trips, it gives me a little bit of comfort and also makes me feel at ease just in case something was to happen I have a plan and insurance to go with that plan. For my last trip I was so rushed and busy that I forgot one thing and that was to book insurance, it was on the top of my list but somehow it got overlooked.
I went away on my travels to LA and was blissfully unaware of my blunder, that was until I got an infection on the bottom of my foot. I was self treating it and thought by day three it was to bad, so off I went to a chemist who looked at it and said I need medical attention as it was so bad for me to self treat myself anymore. This wasn't an issue for me as I was happy to locate an outpatients center and go get treated before a little light bulb went off in my head and I thought I have no insurance.
I panicked and started to google how much it would be and what I would need to do and just thought well I just can't do it and can't afford it. I had no option but to simply self care my foot and book an emergency appointment back in the UK when I got home. Luckily I only had to wait a few days and at the airport I did get questioned over my foot but they were okay to let me fly after I lied and said it was clearing up.
So when you next think do I need insurance the simple and short answer is yes. Use a checker website by all means to get a nice cheap one but please get insurance. I was very lucky with my blunder an somehow managed to get away with it but some people are not so lucky, when it comes down to it I would rather pay the £20+ for insurance then pay out a massive hospital bill. There is the plus of me travelling for 8 years now and not needing insurance however this one time has made sure I book each time I travel now!
Do you think insurance is worth it or is it just a hassle?
